What is a Tablet PC?

Introduction

A Tablet PC is a flat-panel portable PC, similar in shape to a slate. It is something of a cross product between a notebook PC and a personal digital assistant (PDA). Users use a stylus to write directly onto the screen when they have to feed data into the computer. Tablet PCs come with the facility to connect with internet and other computers wirelessly and have the power of notebook PCs.

What You can Do with a Tablet PC
Tablet PCs use a special edition of Windows XP Professional and run most of XP-compatible applications. A Tablet PC can also be used in connection with devices such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, LAN and WAN.
Tablet PCs come in two models- the convertible model and the pure tablet model. The convertible model has a detachable keyboard. Its screen can rotate up to 180 degrees. You can fold it with the screen side up and use it without the keyboard. It is also possible to detach the keyboard altogether and leave it behind. The pure tablet model is also known as slate PC.
Some users prefer the flexibility of the convertible model while others believe that its folding structure lends itself easily to breakage. They are of the view that the slate model with no moving parts and smoother edges is sturdier than the folding model.

Tablet PCs come with a standard size of 22cm x 30 cm. The screen size is 25 cm. Tablet PCs have color screens with control buttons on the side. Needless to say, the folding models are thicker than the slate models, as the former have a keyboard as well.
When you are using the stylus to write on the tablet PC, it is possible for you to save and print the documents in your handwriting. But Tablet PCs also come with software that can convert these documents into text mode so they can be integrated with other applications. Tablet PCs also have speech recognition software, so you can use devices such as dictation and vocal commands to get your work done.

What’s Great about a Tablet PC?
A tablet PC takes portability and compactness to the next level from notebook PCs and laptops. It weighs only about 1 kg and can be of immense value to executives who are on the move most of their work hours. Handwriting-to-text software, speech recognition etc add further convenience.
